Vibe magazine Background and research

Vibe is music and entertainment magazine which first began in the early 90’s-1998 to be precise-and was founded and produced by musician Quincy Jones in partnership with ‘Time Inc. ’Additionally ,the magazine was originally known as Volume, before they renamed is Vibe. The genre of Vibe consists of R&B and hip-hop styled music and arists.Although, after the production was shut down in the Summer of 2009,it was picked back up and purchase by a private equity investment fund’ Intermedia Partners’ and now Vibe is issued monthly .The magazines target audience is predominantly aimed towards the younger youth who are interested in the urban and hip-hop culture. June 30,2012 ,Vibe had a circulation of 300,943 and 202,49 of this was paid and the 98,504 was non paid.Recently, within the year of 2012Vibe holdings merged with ‘Black Book Media’ from Vibe Media.
HOUSE STYLE

The house style of the magazine varies within different issues of Vibe magazine. However, during the issue in which I chose and analysed the house style of the colour was the following colours;pink, blue, black and white .It seems quite a range of colours but on the cover it doesn’t look to tacky or full of colour because careful consideration has gone it to it to make it look professional and tidy. The colour white is consistent throughout all pages and the magazine and the reason behind this is because the white shows connotations of something being fresh, new and original and his reinforces what Vibe magazine wants the readers to think and believe about the music.

Target Audience
Every cover of the VIBE magazine production carries out one single bold theme which I think could be used to represent t the magazines serious attention towards music. The covers also include a rather simple nature always ensuring that the person on the cover of the magazine stands out and also the key sell tag lines too. This way the audience are drawn in with their key focus on the artist and the music being represented on the cover too. This suggests that the TA are also serious about music and wanting to be highly informed not only of new and upcoming songs and artists but also the background of the artists and the inspiration of the music too.The magazine's single colour theme helps support this idea.

The house-style of the issue of VIBE consists of bright orange ,black and white. These are all bold colours, with orange being the dominant colour (even in Nicki’s hair) I think that these colours are great for attracting younger audiences as they can attract attention easily and be seen from a distance! I particularly like the contrast of the orange and white as I feel it adds dramatically to the over all impact of the front cover and I like how each title colour scheme varies between each and every issue and can be tailored to suit the theme of every cover.
Cover & Content

All vibe magazines usually tend to have quotes from the actual artist on the front page of the magazine meaning something significant to the artist

The magazine is successful partially to the reason that it does not only focus heavily on rap music and branches elsewhere such as Hip Hope. Its close competitors on the other hand such as ‘The source’ is heavily focused on rap music narrowing their target audience their success overall.

Vibe magazine may have exclusive magazines that come out once in a while which contains an artist in the front cover you would not normally expect as Michael Jackson.
