Double page spread- Katty Kurt
"After years of working in ‘The smooth groove’ record shop in Chicago,USA with her sister Diana decided that the life of music was just too intriguing not to lead. The young woman’s years of hard work has slowly paid off with her newly recognized R&B voice, Katty rises to the peak of musical success. With influences such as Rihanna and Adele ,Katty feels that years of English music has inspired every piece of music she has written but now wants to try something that nobody has ever seen I’ve always been fascinated with how the Rihanna rags to riches story and 'How truly spectacular her music was, but also I want to incorporate some new stuff Into my music that will really make a new name to R&B music,’ says Katty and us here at Fierce can’t wait to see what this young lady has installed as well as her worldwide fan base.
Living as the first child and being raised only by being her father who owned a record shop meant Tristan spent most of days after school listening to the classics. ‘I'd sort out the vinyl's, help customers and just chat about about the most amazing artists and albums out there’ Slowly as Katty grew up her taste for music developed and unexpectedly music became apart of her life that she just couldn’t let go of no matter what was expected of her‘They all said I needed to find a well paid job not just something for fun but deep down I knew I was made to become a singer!’. After years of private schools within well respected institutes Katty’s dream of music was put on hold as she followed her family’s wishes of getting a good education and making something of herself but by the age of 20 Katty came to the realisation that no other career could make her happy,‘I had no clue I wanted to do music as a career, I didn't think you really could. like I knew people could become artists but I just never thought It was possible for someone like me. Until one day I thought ‘you know what?Music is my life!’.
Though Katty’s family initially weren’t supportive of the idea they came to a decision that as long as she was happy then it didn’t matter what career she has. But this didn’t change the hardships of trying to make it in the music industry ‘I played for hours and hours on end no breaks singing my heart out not because I needed the money but to prove something not only to my family but to myself!’ Katty came to the bitter truth that maybe the music business isn’t for everybody and decided to put her passion for music on hold. During her last week working in small time bars, pubs and gigs something very unexpected happened to Katty. ‘I was singing one of my original pieces that is now available on my new album when Ed Sheeran just happens to walk in, I was gob smacked and wanted to ask him so many questions but was performing and decided to make a good impression and keep professional and just keep playing. Once I had finished the gig I was packing up when Ed came up to me and told me he really enjoyed my material and thought that there was no other voice out there like mine! And it just sky rocketed from there!’
Now 2 years later Katty is working on her first alum ‘Loud!' After being signed up to Ed Sheeran’s own record label, with offers from other records coming in by the dozens.
With such a high raise to fame in a very short amount of time people are questioning whether or not the fame will get to Katty though she believes she will stay quite grounded through the help of her friends and family and spending most of his time with them when outside of the studio.‘The music industry was nothing like I expected’ as she states that the hardest thing about being a musician is having to create these extremely personal and heart felt songs and then suddenly just give it to the whole world, ‘like what if they hate it or misinterpret what I’m saying like it’s so important my fans enjoy my music as much as I do!’
The musical phenomenon is slowly becoming a world wide sensation with having a 5 night show coming up in the O2, London and 3 in Manhattan's iconic Madison Square Garden which sold amount in a matter of minutes. With over 100,000 people coming to see the artist this week alone it’s hard to comprehend how Katty handles the pressure and since Katty has never played to an audience bigger than 100 it’s an immense jump ‘even the supporting acts have played to bigger audiences!’ States Katty when Fierce asked him how she felt having so many people wanting to see her perform. With all the opportunities that have been available to Katty it’s a shock to here that she had only played in small pubs until this year though releasing 3 singles last year all hitting the top of the charts. ‘I am eternally grateful for all the opportunities the music industry has opened up for me I still find it hard to cope with being under the media’s microscope constantly’.
Being raised without a mother has had a large toll on Katty as she believes she has felt an absence that her father could not fill when growing up that never really left her. Apparently, her mother passing away at such a young age has created inspiration for the majority of the music she writes such as ‘Tell me' a single Katty Kurt released last year which positioned No.1 for 6 weeks on the charts which was actually inspired by her mother. Although it is evident that Katty has been deeply affected by her mother’s absence his father did everything that he could to offer her a princess life.
From this, Katty hopes to pursue more into her career and if lucky enough could go on to a world tour ‘being able to show the world my music would be the biggest honour I could have.’ Though Katty is only travelling to 11 cities during his US tour, she’s still extremely excited to go around the states."
Here I have completed my drafting for my articles, this here is the text I will use for my double page spread.
'So how did your love of music begin?
Well Basically, My dad owned a record shop while I was younger and I spent most of days after school there. I'd sort out the vinyls, help customers and just chat about about the most amazing artists and albums out there. Slowly as I grew up this music grew up with me and became apart of me until there was nothing I wanted to except write music!
Have you always known you wanted a career in music or was it a little unexpected?
Truthfully, No. I had no clue I wanted to do music as a career, I didn't think you really could. like I knew people could become artists but I just never thought It was possible for someone like me. I'd wake up everyday and think to myself 'I'm never going to do anything with my life!' until one day I woke up listening to Mariah Carey and I thought 'You know what? Music is my life!' And I decided from there on out that no matter what I did if it didn't have to do with music, Stuff it!
Talking of family, do any of your friends or family think it's crazy how quickly you shot to fame?
Yeah they do! They think its mental. I don't think I've ever seen them so overwhelmed. Then again, so are my fans, Honestly, they are so supportive but some of the fans when I first started out in dingy old night clubs and bars can't believe that their little secret isn't theirs anymore.
Talking of fans aswell, How are they? Are they crazy obsessed or are they calm about the whole thing?
Most of them are pretty chilled but you will get a handful of real wack jobs! One boy has been my number 1 fan since day one I mean he comes to every concert and has even given me his underwear.
Whoa! That's immense! How do you manage to stay so humble? considering you've sold out 5 nights at the 02 Arena and others more at Manhattan this week alone, that's amazing!
To be perfectly honest, I have idea myself. Five nights is just fantastic, That's like what what, 100,000 people who wanted to see me play. It's just... I'm speechless
Aha! So how is your biggest influence?
Oh well, there's so many but I would have to say Adele.... that woman was a legend and still she is WOW . If I do half as much as that woman did for the music industry I'd be an icon. She influenced so many choices I made in my life and I'd always think to myself 'What would Adele do?' and I'd always end up doing the thing that was stupid but in the long hall made me who I am.
Well, with all this fame aren't you scared at all, you're only 26!?
I know that's just what I don't get. It just proves to me that adults like my music aswell because I don't think 100,000 teenagers will come and see me, I am absolutely terrified. This iss the biggest audience I have ever played to. The supports have even played bigger audiences than me so I'm sure that they will calm me down before the shows.'
Any hints to who your supporting acts are?
Of course not!
Aw damn, any tips for inspiring artists who want to shot to fame as quickly as you did?
Just be yourself, don't let anyone change you because as soon as you do that people will expect things from you that you just can't do and suddenly you don't even recognise who you are anymore. All I can say is play the music you want to play and stick to your guns!
Wow, that's great advice! Well one more last thing, I've been dying to know. Can we, the fans, expect any new music or albums to released any time soon?
Well I can't say much but if there is it is going to be completely different to my original stuff. I have had a lot of things happen to me recently and it has really changed me as a person and I really want to reflect that within my music, and hopefully this maybe new stuff will be relatable to my fans out there going through a hard time.
